Koło Naukowe Rewitalizacja

The “Revitalization” Science Club, operating at the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Resource Management, brings together enthusiasts of structures and areas abandoned by industry. Our goal is to deepen and disseminate knowledge in the field of revitalization of degraded areas, which we use to introduce real projects into public space. We face challenges not only at the university, but also in the field, working with revitalization stakeholders. Revitalization, as an interdisciplinary field, requires us to learn skills and get qualifications from various fields of science, while it raises our awareness to social and cultural issues. In a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, we work towards implementation of projects (such as e.g. financed by the Rector’s Grant), and we also participate in research trip, both near and distant. Currently, one of our most important projects, financed by the Rector's Grant, is the construction of a heliostat in the Liban’s Quarry, the revitalization of which we are constantly striving towards. The heliostat is to function as a sustainable lighting, friendly to sensitive quarry’s natural environment, highlighting the preserved industrial heritage. It does not require electricity to operate, and at the same time it turns off when the sun sets, thus not disturbing the day and night cycle of bats and insects living there. Moreover, “Revitalization” Science Club cooperates in the faculty projects. One of them is the RESTART project, co-financed by the EU, aimed at introducing tools for the revitalization of post-mining areas for the development of sustainable cultural tourism. Together with partners from Greece and Spain, whom we had an opportunity to host at the Liban’s Quarry in December 2023, we want to develop cultural paths that will facilitate learning about the history of industry in post-mining areas, including our Krakow quarry.
